Whelping A Litter & Kentucky Ice Storm

We just went though an ice storm, where we lost power here for 5 ½ days.  We were in pretty good shape with a wood stove in the basement and a propane gas stove and  fireplace upstairs.  We also were one of the fortunate ones to have water and of course being in the country we were on a septic system so had no problems with a bathroom available.

Having a German Shepherd litter due in Kentucky within a couple weeks, my thoughts went towards expecting a litter in a winter storm and if power was lost again just what would I do to keep new pups warm enough. One of the items I plan to get this week because of this power outage that I think would help, would be the old fashion hot water bottle. I plan to have a few of them on hand, as I can always heat water and place them under the quilts the puppies will be on for warmth. Another thing mentioned was hunting and camping gear heater items, I will need to look into this. It is necessary to keep puppies warm especially the first several days, and winter is far from over. If anyone out there has been though such a thing I would love to hear what you did in this type situation.

I really liked this link on litter development it has a great timeline.

I hope the rest of Kentucky and the rest of the states that were hit, gets their power turned back on soon.
