We have yet another super nice Kobe x Shakira puppy that is progressing very nicely. Living in a home with other dogs and children and being trained with powerful shaping techniques, this puppy has very strong natural protection drives that are being developed hand in hand with the obedience and house manners.
This puppy has natural retrieving skills and will grow up to be a super fun companion capable of working at any level you chose to take him.

Kirsche has ball drive equal or better than my Malinois did which says A LOT!! She will retrieve anything which is awesome but she drops everything at my feet. I want that for the ball and always say drop but how do I get her to hold the dumb bell until I take it and tell her out?? You picked a great one for me as usual David she is almost spitting image of CJ and weighs the exact same a hefty 52 lbs LOL Does NOT have CJ’s attitude AT ALL. But as she is nearing 2 years old she is calming down and turning into a great dog!! Any help with the dumb bell hold would be great!!

Hi Amber:
Get down on all 4’s and show her what you are wanting her to do, maybe she learns by watching!

What do you mean “shaping method”. Is this something I can use to train my pet dog?

Many of the reasons to own a protection dog are the reasons to own any dog. Makes me think about why I have a dog.

Amber,
I would restart the training on the retrieve with clicker training. Get a dumbbell (no not a boyfriend) put it on the floor and click and treat her for just looking at it. Then for touching it and then for picking it up, then for carrying it, then for bringing it to you, and then finally bringing it to your hand. Using Shaping methods you can get her bringing the dumbbell to your hand in a few weeks. If that doesn’t work or you don’t want to do the work it’s time for a forced retrieve. Not fun, but it works.

Ann,
You are right. Many of the reasons for owning a dog are the same as reasons for owning a protection dog. But, if the chips are down and you really need protection from a bad guy intent on harm the average pet will not be up for the task.

where can I get more information on training my dog?

Sam,
Shaping IS a method of training. It is used to slowly move a behavior towards the right response. For example: To get a dog to down you can start by rewarding it simply for touching it’s nose to your hand, then to follow your hand about, then lowering it’s head while following your hand. Over several attempts the dog will follow your hand all the way down to the ground and lay down. Bingo. You have shaped a down with no fuss.

Ralph,
What do you want to train your dog to do? We do AKC obedience, Schutzhund, Tracking, Tricks and everything in-between. Just tell us what you’re interested in and we’ll develop a training system to help you meet your goals.

I think I stated something wrong. She RETREIVES ANYTHING Beautifully. I can throw a remote, dumb bell, phone, keys and she will get it but she brings it and drops it at my feet!! HOW do I get her to HOLD IT until I say drop it. The only thing she will do that with is a ball she won’t drop a ball unless I say drop. Or out to put it in my hand so she knows the commands just I need her to do it WITH the dumb bell keys remote etc…

Mr. Harris,
In all my research of the different German Shepherd pedigrees out there in the U.S., it seems to me as the so called “Kobe x Shakira” duo seems to be heard everywhere in many different dog worlds (Schutzhund, personal protection, PSA, AKC to name a few). What are some of the known advantages to owning these fine dogs you’re breeding? Is it true that they’re fierce in home defense, but loyal and adaptable to any home situation? Is it also true, Sir, that you have multiple prodgeny from this breeding slated for compedition Schutzhund and AKC trials this year, with more than a few expected big wins?
Tell me your tale.
